There's a time and a place for Pharrell and the first taste of an upcoming Ed Sheeran album is not the place I want him. It's still decent but it's not even close to what I was hoping for. | |
Genuinely shocked I have yet to see the term sell out be used to describe this... Anyway I like this, even if it's not as much as most of the songs I've heard from him prior. It's a nice departure from what he usually does. | |

I was prepared for it being ridiculously upbeat and unlike him, but I really couldn't get into 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' for a reason. The production is there to make it interesting but honestly it ends up rather plain. 3.25 | |

Een krappe voldoende voor dit ietwat teleurstellende nummer van Ed Sheeran. Een prima zanger, maar dit nummer stelt me een beetje teleur. Die kopstem vind ik dan niet erg irritant, maar het verveelt snel, en heeft niet dat ene magische van 'The A Team', waarmee hij alleen maar met wat akkoorden, tekst en zang mij kippenvel kan bezorgen. Deze stijl is ook heel anders dan we van Sheeran verwachten. Nee, Ed Sheeran, ga maar verder met je normale stijl. Dit nummer verveelt snel, maar is ook wel leuk. | |

This definitely was not the direction that I wanted or expected Ed to go to, but it's a solid return nonetheless. | |
I just can't believe that this is Ed's first #1, it feels like he's been around for ages and had hit after hit after hit. But now thanks to actual Pharrell Williams (ACTUAL Pharrell Williams!) he's done it with this song. He'd probably do an interview in his pants if asked, he's so romantic. I can totally see how this is a hit. It's very ear catching with the guitar sticking out (instead of mellowing in the background as per usual), and it keeps up with a good pace through the track. I thought it was instantly appealing. What's funny for me is that with time, what I like about the track has somewhat flipped over. I was really into the pair of chorus hooks on this track, but now they seem a bit lacking to me. It would just so happen that by the end of the track, the falsetto 'I need ya darlin...', joins forces with the 'oh oh oh oh oh' and makes for a really satisfying payoff, yet I found it annoying at first! | |

This is one of my favourite Ed songs, Pharrell's production is brilliant, the chorus has great vocals, I love his rap verse plus the song has great lyrics considering its about trying to get a girl | |
