classic pop track from the 90's

It's a solid pop tune but is slowly fading off as forgettable.

Raw and edgy. Classic TLC.

The quintessential contemporary RnB standard that I compare the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna to.
A classic.

Do agree with Hijinx. The hook is very good but it is a little bland otherwise, but it's not bad or anything. Good enough though. Depends on my mood ultimately, sometimes it can be really cool but sometime it's just a drag.

R&B classic of the mid '90s. Good harmonies. A memorable and unique rap in the bridge. 5.3*

Video was ahead of its time (budgeted at a cool $1 million which they had to force L.A. Reid's hand)

Left Eye's rap turns it from memorable to iconic.

I really don't like using the term 'overrated' as a way to describe anything. Partly because it's a lazy descriptor which comes across to me as 'haha, all these plebs who adore this are completely wrong, but I'm right'. It's just rude and made worse by the fact that it is almost never complimented by a justification. This just comes across as saying you don't 'get' something as opposed to 'there is actually something fundamentally flawed with this piece of music and no one has noticed'. That is what it should be used for. Though there is amusement to be had when it's used by someone with a poor grip on spelling, which essentially turns the meaning into 'derr, I'm not smart enough to get this'. I suppose I wish people would use it less, but that to me is just so hilarious that I would miss it if it were gone.

And the reason I mention this is that contrary to my regular stance, if there was a song that I'd have wanted to out as overrated, it was this. My justification was that it seems to get a blind level of praise above any other TLC songs, because it's memorablee purely because it has that hook; in reality the song is rather glacially paced and not a worthwhile listen (which anyone might not realise if they praise it for the chorus and never actually listen to the whole thing).

But I accept that I was wrong! It's actually not a bad R&B jam that has its merits. Not particularly to my taste but I'm hardly going to act like my opinion is the only viable one. Maybe I'll even grow to like it properly soon. 3.4

I have always found this on the ordinary side and always wondered how it had such a decent chart run on Billboard followed by it's success at the Grammy's.

I can now tolerate the song but still don't think much of it.

I also wonder how it made the 1996 year end top 100 on ARIA with such a poor chart run during the 1996 charting period when a song like Gangsta's Paradise missed the top 100 altogether and had a much better chart run including 2 weeks at #1?
