Umm good I guess, now that the wank is over. I'm not as sensitive to love songs now. Well normally I don't mind because they are subtle and there is emotion that can be drawn from it but this is as subtle as a brick to the face.
I wish sexuality wasn't so celebrated in society today, and I think it's logical to stop stressing the importance of a relic of the past. So I disagree with the message but this song is delivered well I guess.

It's a weird juxtaposition for me to hear him rap about a serious topic, but this is nice I think. I can't shake the feeling that he's a slight pitch modulation away from sounding like Tyler, The Creator, ha!

Really great song! Loving this one at the moment and I like that he's brave enough to talk about this. Amazing. And of course I pretty much agree with everything he says and I like that he puts his own experience into the lyrics - it really adds extra emotion and feeling to the song as a whole.

Amazing song, much better than Thrift Shop, so cool to see a rapper singing about this kinda thing. I hope this can become a hit, I feel that it's important that it does.

Brilliant track I must say, but probably just slightly behind 'Thrift Shop' for me.

Amazing message in this song, and going from a fun song to a serious one such as this shows this rapper has some variation about him.

Wouldn't it be great if this were Australia's 1000th #1???? :)

This is a great song, very good message aswell.

While I admit that I am undecided on the issue discussed in this song, I really like the accompanying music to the rapping and it sounds like a much better produced The Festival Song. As for the lyrics, I appreciate Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for voicing out their stance on the issue and the rap was delivered beautifully with some very well written lyrics.

Something more serious than Thrift Shop. Agreed with antonnalan.

It's so bizarre that this song can come from the same person that Thrift Shop does. They both have their good qualities, neither is bad, it's just that they're so VERY far apart. Great message to the song, it's delievered very well, and more importantly, he comes across as genuine. Very nice. Thrift Shop is more fun, this is more important.

I am very VERY passionate about this issue, and the fact that a song about it could chart and be a hit makes me very happy!
Well done Macklemore for speaking up in a genre which is usually very disparaging to the LGBT community.

zxcvcxz: That's just extremely rude and offensive.

A great track that is a very serious and stern offering from Macklemore. I would definitely prefer this over "Thrift Shop" any day in my opinion!

This has been a surprise Aussie #1. It's not too often that there's a successful political song on today's charts. Macklemore states his view fairly, and provides 'food for thought' to the listener.
I wouldn't say I love his rap, but this song on the whole is a pleasant listen.

I'm a little conflicted with this these days, largely because of how it's how a white man that is addressing issues of homophobia by music fans of a genre that has its origin in the culture of black people. Sure, homophobia can be found and it does need to be addressed, but the way it's addressed in this song could be better. Implying YouTube comments is equivalent to hip-hop artists was perhaps not the best idea. It also irks me a little to hear a straight man applauded so much for making this song, I do love that he wrote this song but I and others were probably a bit hyperbolic in talking about it at the time.

But still, this song means a lot to me, because at the time I was dealing with my own sexuality and struggling to accept it and deal with it. I'm glad I loved this song at the time because I feel like my support for the LGBT community was rather muted before I came out which is something I regret. I love how Macklemore inserts his own experience in falling prey to stereotypes rooted in homophobia into the song while also stating his own views on the matter. Macklemore's rapping is pretty good but it takes a back seat compared to the lyrics, the production and Mary Lambert's brilliant vocals in the chorus. The chorus is brilliant and I love how she sings how it's just love, and how denying legitimate love like that is pretty sad. Music video is also beautiful and captures the essence of what both Macklemore and especially Mary Lambert are saying.

It could've been done better, but I think this song is important and I love that it has potentially changed the minds of some people and made them think twice before blurting out their casual homophobia. 2017 and still no marriage equality in Australia, this song still has a relevancy (in the context of Australia) five years after its initial release.

Great message, great video and fantastic lyrics, however it lacks in most other areas which ultimately causes it to fall a bit flat. Still have to score it well because I feel this is a rather significant #1 single and not something we see often.

A great message, and lyrics, and I like the chorus. But there is just something lacking in this that can only make me give it a 3. It's 3.5 at best.

I though I'd really like it because I'm gay and I feel it's important we get the message out there; it's a pleasant song but on the whole it's very unremarkable.

I really like this song. It really hits the point with its lyrics + the production is great.
I love this line particulary:
"I might not be the same, but that's not important
No freedom till we're equal, damn right I support it"

I wish it became as popular as "Thrift Shop" worldwide. Rap hasn't sounded this interesting in such a long time

While I'm gay myself, and I feel the song is bringing some important issues to light - I can't help but feel the song is lacking something... It just doesn't flow well at all. I'm only giving it a 3 because of the message, otherwise it'd be a 1.

Easily the best of the three singles released so far from 'The Heist' but grew very tiresome due to over play in the media.
Extra credit given to the subject matter :-)

Peaked at #36 on my personal chart.

Netjes.

Personally I’m completely neutral (Not for it or against it) when it comes to this issue so it doesn’t give me the same emotional impact that it would for others who do care about it. Not a bad track but not really that good either.

A tender and heartbreaking message of blaming homophobic prejudices on culture associated with traditionally black music on the basis on 'YouTube comments' as articulated by a white man who has been so deservingly applauded by the mainstream media as the first rapper to take a stance on homophobia, Thanks for that.

I'm not sure how Macklemore and Ryan Lewis can claim to have a problem with fascism yet don't seem to have a problem practising it.

It did take a lot of bravery to rap about such a serious topic that is so influential to society, so props for him for doing that instead of (as Fabio pointed out) talking about girls and money (which I could argue he does in "Thrift Shop" but it's just too tongue-in-cheek). I absolutely agree with what he is saying in this and I find that homophobia is definitely something unacceptable in this day and age anyway.

On to the song, it's very nice. The production is quite soothing and his rap isn't as attacking as on "Can't Hold Us", and really does well to bring across the message. It's certainly my favourite of theirs and is better than the previous single and undoubtedly better than the extremely bad succeeding single. I'm happy that it got to #1 as it was an influential song which can add to the more memorable number ones of 2013 and the decade. 5.1*.

I honestly think all marriage is a sham and that there is other ways to express love, but if two people want to tackle that mess and are of the same gender, then so be it. It shouldn't take a black-wannabe douche to tell you that.

Since I understand that there will always be some form of intolerance from one group to another since it is one part of being human we have to deal with, I find the lyrics naive and whiny and the "gay-is-victim" narrative to be getting old. It doesn't help that I find Macklemore to have an incredibly annoying voice. Lambert's performance is good, but it doesn't save this song from getting a 1.
